I was delighted to work with award-winning agency Bearded Kitten on the grand reopening of Battersea Power Station, producing two unique special events with equal ambition, celebrating the rebirth of a giant!
The private spectacle revealed the impeccable reconstruction of the building, which was accompanied by a 360° multi-dimensional ceremony and aerial theatre production. As a key member of a dedicated team of engineers, designers, and specialists, I offered expert consultancy on the specifications for set, stage, and scenic elements, identified optimal construction methodologies, and developed detailed production blueprints.
Ambitious rigging, groundbreaking choreography, and immaculate stage design elevated a fully immersive performance set among gigantic disco balls and bespoke illuminated podiums doubling as service counters; our arena design ensured a front-row seat to the action from all angles.
A bespoke holo gauze screen rigged above the arena on kinetic hoists provided a dynamic storytelling surface for our audience. Footage of architect Sir Giles Gilbert Scott was digitally remastered, transforming into a realistic hologram and breathing life into his vision and legacy.
The public ceremonies opened with a commemorative speech delivered by London Mayor Sadiq Khan, culminating in a countdown. The cutting of the ribbon was celebrated by a big bang moment, unleashing an array of smoke mines and biodegradable confetti cannons from the iconic chimneys, leaving the audience in awe and wonder.
The five-day 'Festival of Power' was a truly unique spectacle, featuring a diverse array of local performers across multiple stages and culminating in a mesmerizing performance by Arcadia's Lords of Lightning. In collaboration with renowned lighting designers Woodroffe and Bassett, we installed over one thousand meters of truss, creating an extraordinary opportunity to illuminate the building’s elegant features with dramatic effect.
As the lead for construction design management, I spearheaded the logistical and operational delivery across the event site during installation, live execution, and de-rigging. Given the scale and complexity of the project, aligning stakeholders, establishing a clear communication strategy, executing precision-phased construction planning, and employing a dynamic approach to problem-solving were crucial to our success.
To effectively manage traffic across the estate and ensure robust security, we implemented a comprehensive operational strategy. This involved conducting swept path analyses, developing contingency plans, and adhering to systematic design and management processes. We meticulously documented the scope of work, contracts, and phased construction plans to maintain strict adherence to the schedule.
Our focus on value engineering and budgeting allowed us to maximize the event's impact by efficiently allocating resources. The success of this project was driven by clear and concise communication, meticulous attention to detail, and strong interdepartmental collaboration. It was a true honour to be part of such a dedicated team.
